Game Summary/Box Score May 6, 2006 Missoula Raptors at Glacier Knights @ Columbia Falls High School
May 6, 2006 Missoula Raptors at Glacier Knights @ Columbia Falls High School
MISSOULA 32 GLACIER 14
COLUMBIA FALLS – The Glacier Knights played perhaps their best game in franchise history. They lead, they battled, however, eventually still came up short to the defending Montana Champion, Missoula Raptors as the Raptors recorded two defensive scores and received another solid game from tailback, Gavin Johnson in securing the victory and retaining sole possession of first place in the Northern division of the AA.
Johnson rushed for 89 yards on 16 carries and a touchdown; Johnson’s touchdown turned a 7-6 game into a 13-6 game temporarily… as the Knights all-star and reining Montana MVP, Jason Zielanski blocked the extra point and returned it 93 yards for a rare conversion return score, making the game 13-8 at that time.
The Knights actually drew first blood when Zielanski capped a Knight drive running in for a touchdown from 5 yards out and the Knights lead the game from midway through the first quarter until early in the second quarter.
Two big defensive plays turned out to be the difference for the Raptors as Max McCracken covered an errant punt snap for the teams first touchdown and Brian Hughes intercepted Zielanski and returned it 65-yards for a score to put the game out of reach at that time by the 32-8 margin. Sandwiched in between the two defensive scores were two Shane Jurasek to Tyler Boaz touchdown passes, however, the Knights defense held the top-rated Jurasek to only 34-yards passing on the day.
A new star seemed to emerge for the Knights with the addition to the team of Mike Kuehne. Kuehne rushed 15 times for 83 yards and helped out on defense. However, his contribution to what has been an anemic Knight rushing attack may help make the Knights a serious threat to play spoiler for the remainder of the season.
